San Juan Hills beats El Toro

The San Juan Hills boys volleyball team hasn’t had a lot of time together, but things appear to be working out.

There are three sophomore starters and one senior that played junior varsity team last year all playing for a new coach, Justin DeBlasio. It could have been a recipe for disaster for the Stallions.

However, they’re certainly not what they could have been.

In the short time under DeBlasio, San Juan Hills has emerged as a team to watch and Thursday it moved into sole possession of second place in the Sea View League with the 25-20, 25-23, 25-23 home victory over El Toro.

“They have bought into the work ethic and to the new system that I brought in,” DeBlasio said. “They’re a team. There’s really no go-to-guy. We have a well-balanced offense and other teams don’t know who to key in on.”

Logan Zotovich led San Juan Hills (17-10, 4-2) with 11 kills. James Brown had seven. The trio of Jesse Carrillo, Wylie Simpson and Reed Wilson all had five apiece.

San Juan Hills won the first match against El Toro on March 29 in five games. In the fifth game, the score was 15-13.

“We came out with a better intensity this time,” San Juan Hills middle blocker Jesse Carrillo said. “If we lost a point, we kept our heads in the game.

“The coach makes a big difference. He brings a lot of new intensity. We do a lot of different things in practice. Everyone has gotten a little better and now we’re starting to click.”

After winning the first two games, the Stallions opened the third and jumped out to a 6-1 lead. The Chargers would eventually take the lead, 14-13, on a kill by Jacob Trok.

Later in the match, El Toro took a 22-21 lead on an ace by Nick Boyd.

San Juan Hills would score the next three points and would end the match on a kill by Simpson.

Trok led El Toro (20-15, 1-6) with 10 kills.

In the Trinity League

No. 9 Santa Margarita 3, Orange Lutheran 1: Mitch Vallis led the Eagles (13-12, 4-3) with 25 kills in the 28-26, 17-25, 25-17, 25-20 home victory over the Lancers.

Santa Margarita bounced back from losing to Mater Dei in three games earlier this week.

In the Century League

Foothill 3, Villa Park 2: Jason Weedon led the visiting Knights (14-7, 6-1) with 27 kills and Joe Ko had 37 assists in the 17-25, 25-14, 25-13, 19-25, 15-10 victory over the Spartans.
